UWE Packer Consulting ServicesA new way to look at your IT needs. June 18 Optus reduces servicesRecently Optus changed their ADSL services to ADSL2. Great? There is a trade off. I was told that I may loose my phone number should I wish to transfer to another provider in the future. What has this got to do with internet services? I am yet to receive an explanation. As for faster internet there is a trade off as well. Firstly in place of the ability to create a home page, users are now directed to this service. As I am a user of this service I obviously do not believe that there is anything wrong with this service. However the flexibility of creating a home page cannot be replaced by spaces. Optus has taken the listing of members home pages off their site as well. After 3 attempts I finally received the answer that this listing will not be returned. On top of this my access fee has increased. I wonder where the improvement in the service is? I believe the service level has decreased. Optus is welcome to respond this post at any time and I will publish anything they are sending me in response. May 16 Manly rip offLast Sunday I took my wife out to Manly just to walk along the beach and have an ice cream. To my dismay I found that it has become even more difficult to vist Manly then before. Now the Counil car park costs $A6.00 per hour after the first two free hours. Two free hours are just enough to park and have an ice cream. Not time is left for browsing in shops, walk along the beach and visit other attractions at Manly. To me the message the Council is sending to me is that I am not needed to visit businesses at Manly unless I know where I am going and I can do my business in a very short period of time. Sorry to all business people in Manly who hope to sell their wares to tourists - including parking your wares are becomming very expensive and uncompetitive. I will now go to a beach where I am not charged just to show up. April 13 Royal Easter ShowVisiting the Royal Easter Show in Sydney was a very expensive experience.
Firstly the train tickets were sold at premium prices. The state government wishes to encourage people to use the railways to get to evnets yet they make it less expensive to use cars by charging a premium for rail travel. Silly!
Secondly the enterance fee into the show was that expensive that it would take about one hour of work per person to enter the show. Thus just to get into the show for a family of 4 takes 1/2 day of work.
Thirdly once in the show visitors get overrun by sellers of show guides. 2 thin magazines containing nothing more then a map of the grounds and a badly written guide to the events within the show for the first and the second one contained a bunch of discount coupons for stuff that is so overpriced that even with the discounts most of the things are cheaper outside the show. The constant advertising of these extreamly expensive guides put me off to the extent that I was fleeing the enterance area as soon as possible as conversation with my fellow visitors was close to impossible.
Fourthly comes the food. I'd say that 80% of the food available was very expensive junk food. The other 20% was acceptable to good but still very expensive. Drinks were mostly as overpriced as the food. I was unable to locate one bubbler to obtain a free drink of water.
Fifth is the lack of signage. Yes a few signs existed pointing out how to get to the railway station etc but unless in frot of the enterance of a pavilion there were no signs where to go. I suppose this was designed so visitors needed the expensive guides.
Sixth was the quality of the show bags. Very few of them measured up to what I would call value for money. The quality of some of the goods inside the bags was poor at best.
Seventh the animal displays appeared to be concentrated in one area of the show. Pity as this is one of the major reasons for having the show. The garden exhibition was pityful. Great flower arangements and roses but where were the gardens?
Eighth the district displays were great! Some people wet through a lot of trouble creating them. I would have appriciated a short explanation of how the exhibits were judged. At least this time I found maps as to the areas the districts covered. I finally learned something.
Ninth the rides. How lucky for us not to have children with us. The price of the rides would be a killer.
Generally I found the visit to the show somewhat disapointing. Mainly because of the horrendes expense. Just to get there, enter and have a meal would be about $50.00 per person. And then people are expected to go on rides and buy stuff?!? You have got to be joking! March 31 Thinking about buying Windows Vista?Windows Vista is the latest operating system released by Microsoft. A lot of people are wondering if it is worthwhile to upgrade to Vista.
Vista comes in a variety of versions. If you are thinking of buying the basic home version save your money! All you will achieve is a slight improvement that may well be outweight by the upgrades to the equipment you need to make Vista work properly. Whether you are in business or at home you need to consider the requirment of Vista to contact Microsoft at regular intervals over the internet to check and re-check that it is not a pirated copy. Thus if you are not in the internet you have a problem.
Stay away from some "OEM" versions of Windows as some of these are NOT supported by Microsoft. An OEM version is generally a version that is provided to you by a PC or Laptop manufacturer to work with their computers only.
How about all the programs you are used to and that make computing fun? There is a possibility that you will need to upgrade them as well.
You may have heard that Microsoft said that Vista is a great improvement in safty. True - to a point. Do not relay on Mocrosoft on stop security. Microsoft itself is very disapointed.
If however you have the equipment to run Vista and you are thinking of buying a version other then the most basic you will enjoy new features and some greatly enhanced old once. Need computer support?UWE Packer Consulting Services
